3 Popular Greenhouse Sizes

Find the one that sounds like your season. The square footage includes walkways — it is the footprint you'd buy, not just bench area.
Compact backyard greenhouse beside raised beds
COMPACT SPACES
Up to 20 sq ft
Seed trays, hardening off, a few tomatoes in pots. One bench along a wall, standing room for one person.
Gardener with a basket of produce outside her greenhouse
MEDIUM SIZE
Up to 50 sq ft
Benches down both sides, a real walkway, room for tall crops at one end and a place to stand out of the rain.
Gardener harvesting from a greenhouse with in-ground beds
LARGER SIZES
Up to 100 sq ft
In-ground beds, a heater, a wheelbarrow that fits through the door. This is where the greenhouse stops being seasonal.

What are you planning to grow?

A standard garden bed is 2 ft deep. A comfortable walkway is 2.5–3 ft — narrower and you turn sideways every time you carry a tray.
A
Garden beds on one side only
2 ft bed + 3 ft walkway = 6 ft wide minimum
B
Garden beds on both sides
2 + 2 ft beds + 3 ft walkway = 8 ft wide minimum
C
Both sides + in-ground bed
add a 3 ft bed and a second walkway = 12–14 ft wide
D
Then pick the length
Length is the cheap dimension. Each extra 6.5 ft section adds ~52 sq ft on an 8 ft wide house — far cheaper per square foot than going wider later.
Inside a greenhouse: beds on both sides with a stone walkway

Rule of thumb: two trays of seedlings per running foot of bed. If you start 20 trays each spring, that's 10 ft of bed — one side of a 13 ft house, with the other side free for pots.

Measure the site, not the greenhouse

  1. 01

Leave 2 ft of clearance on every side for assembly and panel replacement.

  2. 02

Check the door swing and path width — a 30 in. gate stops a wheelbarrow.

  3. 03

Confirm your local setback and permit threshold; many towns exempt structures under 120 sq ft.

  4. 04

Size the base for the largest house you might extend to, even if you buy short today.

  5. 05

Mark the footprint with stakes and live with it for a day before ordering.

“I thought 6.5 ft would feel tight and it does — but it fits the side yard, and that was the whole point.”
