What made you get a Planta Greenhouse?
My first job was working at a greenhouse in 1970. I spent most of my adult life working for Parks and Forestry. When I retired and we moved to Eastern Ontario and bought a 2-acre homestead, I wanted to install a greenhouse. I searched many sites and talked to dozens of people. The Planta Greenhouse was well regarded and the price was right. Not too expensive, but well built.
What competitors did you consider before purchasing from Planta Greenhouses?
I considered the Riga, the Palram, even an Arcadia Glass Greenhouse.
Why did you choose to buy from Planta Greenhouses?
Best price, heavy-duty frame, double polycarbonate, its ability to shed snow in the winter, the automatic vents. Almost immediate responses from the manager whenever I had a question. The fact that this is a Canadian company, the cost of shipping all the parts was so much less expensive compared to other companies, no need to worry about duty.
What do you grow inside your greenhouse?
I grow bedding plants and vegetables for late May for ourselves, my family, friends, and the neighbours. This includes flats of begonias, petunias, calibrachoa, alyssum, marigolds, ageratum, pansies, verbena, dahlias, zinnias, cleome, coleus, delphinium, foxglove. Tomatoes, cucumbers, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, squash, corn, potatoes. I also put in a crop of greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce started in late July. The harvest starts in September and continues until early December.
How did your Planta Greenhouse improve your gardening experience?
I was able to grow my own vegetables for our family, friends, and our neighbours, as well as all the annual, biennial, and perennial flowers. This was especially important during the COVID outbreak when there were food shortages. We now have an ample supply of vegetables that last throughout the winter. Spanish onions were started in February under grow lights in the basement. These were moved to the Planta Greenhouse in early March and transplanted into the raised gardens in the middle of May. These were harvested in September and stored in the garage. We have enough Spanish onions to last until June or July right now.
What was your experience like buying from Planta Greenhouses? (Was it easy to buy? How was customer service? etc.)
I dealt with Greig, the manager, and he was very good to deal with. Always got back to me. Together we worked at designing a better plan that would allow new buyers to more easily put the greenhouses together with the use of video instruction. This was back in 2019.
What's your favourite thing about the Planta Greenhouse?
Just how heavy duty it is. I purchased a ShelterLogic "greenhouse" last April since I had way too many plants even with my 26' Sungrow. This ShelterLogic (SL) was 10' x 20' x 8' high. It doesn't hold the heat. The same type of heater in the Sungrow kept everything cozy. In the SL greenhouse, some of my petunias suffered frost dieback. I needed to use two-way tape and then tack a piece of heavy-duty poly to the inside of the frame. A thunderstorm in early June brought the SL down. Many of the steel poles were bent and twisted. The cover was punctured in several spots. The Planta was untouched.
What would you say to a person considering purchasing a Planta Greenhouse?
Get ready for some great growing. Inspire your friends on Facebook and Instagram. Mine is now in year 5 and it looks brand new.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I enjoy my greenhouse but hopefully, the ends have been upgraded over the last 4-5 years. The doors work but they do not seal well. I have spent a lot of $$ annually needing to purchase gaskets for both doors in order to keep the heat in and to cut down on drafts. It might help to have some type of retainer that can be mounted to each piece of polycarbonate so that the pieces fit together better. For the peak, I had to partially cut with a utility knife halfway through to allow me to bend and form the peak. Hopefully, this has been improved upon. Overall, very happy with my 26' Sungrow. I have it almost full of this year's crops.
