Started planting in mid April vs late May
What do you grow in your greenhouse?
The majority is a variety of vegetables with a few flowers to attract pollinators. Spinach, beets, carrots, peas, Swiss chard, lettuce, beans, zucchini, squash, cucumbers, fennel, basil and dill. I cordon the tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash to optimize space. I also put in pots of nasturtiums, snapdragons, and petunias to hopefully attract pollinators.
What other brands did you consider before deciding to go with a Planta Greenhouse?
BC Greenhouses and a number offered on Amazon, or at building supply and nurseries in the area.
How was your online shopping experience like buying from Planta Greenhouses?
It was very good. Any questions I had were answered quickly. The only trepidation I had was not knowing the cost of shipping until after I had ordered my greenhouse kit. My order was handled and shipped quickly and it arrived within a short time and there was no damage.
How did this greenhouse change your gardening experience?
I live in the foothills area of Alberta and the growing season here is limited. We are not unknown to have snow in any of the months of summer and frost-free days limit many plants I wish to grow. We also often have severe thunderstorms in summer with devastating hail. This year, I was able to start planting in the greenhouse in mid-April versus late May. Sensitive plants were transplanted into it in mid-May. This year, I have been harvesting vegetables since later May and crops like spinach, peas, and beans are already done in mid-July which is the earliest ever for me. The greenhouse has protected my gardens from severe weather and has extended my growing season this spring. I look forward to having an extended growing season this fall. I do not heat my greenhouse so rely on the greenhouse to give me warmer conditions for my plants. I am very pleased with it.
What's your favourite thing about the greenhouse?
It has protected and sheltered my raised gardens and kept a warm humid atmosphere inside which has extended my growing season here in Zone 2b-3. Early in the spring, all I had to do is close it up at night and it maintained a reasonable temperature for my plants. It also protects my gardens from the weather. It is very sturdy and has not shown any weakness in high winds or heavy snow.
