Star Garden: Growing With Purpose

Is this your first greenhouse? YES

What year did you install this greenhouse? 2023

What do you grow inside your greenhouse? Outside of tomatoes and peppers, we've mainly been using our greenhouse for early seed starting and seedling care. April through July we seem to always have something on the grow!

How did your Planta Greenhouse improve your gardening experience? Our greenhouse has helped us out in a number of ways. We've been able to stretch our growing season by getting seedlings started early in the spring, then out and into our main garden. While that crop grows outdoors, we're able to start another batch of seed trays. When we begin to harvest our first crop mid-summer, there is a whole new batch of seedlings in the greenhouse ready for replanting!

What was your experience like buying from Planta Greenhouses? Online ordering was simple. The shipment arrived well in time to get things put together for gardening season. The assembly video directions were well done.

What type of upgrades have you done? Tell us about your most innovative DIY solutions added to your greenhouse. Our greenhouse rests on a crushed gravel pad and treated wood frame of 8 x 8's. We've added a raised bed along one side of the greenhouse, and a work counter with underneath shelving on the opposite side. There is a higher shelf that skirts the perimeter as well. Keeping with our permaculture practices, the fixtures in the greenhouse have been mostly constructed using reclaimed wood from pallets and fencing.

What’s your favorite thing about your Planta Greenhouse? We love to see our senior volunteers working in the greenhouse on cooler days—watering, planting and visiting together.

Anything else you’d like to add? This greenhouse is a part of Star Garden—a cooperative gardening project by The Star of the North Retreat Centre developed through education around the ecologically sustainable practices of organic, deep-mulch, no-till gardening. This past season, Star Garden had the helping hands of over 50 dedicated volunteers who together clocked over 500 volunteer hours. With the help of our greenhouse, the project recorded a record one-tonne harvest (1,042 kilograms) of potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, squash, peas, beans, lettuce, corn, cabbage, kale, pumpkins, berries, pears, zucchini, beets, broccoli, garlic, tomatoes, mushrooms, herbs, and more. Approximately 50% of the food harvested was donated to the St. Albert Food Bank. Alongside hosting educational events and local media, Star Garden was featured as a CBC news feature (television and radio) on sustainable urban agriculture (April 2024).
