Is this your first greenhouse? YES
What year did you install this greenhouse? 2022
What do you grow inside your greenhouse? Cabbages, tomatoes, onions, cucumber, beets, kale, Daikon radish, potatoes, microgreens, herbs, fruit trees, strawberries.
How did your Planta Greenhouse improve your gardening experience? At our high plain homestead (9500' elevation) in the Colorado Rockies, the warmest summer nights barely exceed 50°F. Everything we grow outside either freezes to death or never grows, even the most cold-hardy crops can’t withstand the chilly wind chill. Our strong winds often reach 60–80 mph, and snow loads can be several feet. When we decided to build a greenhouse, we needed the toughest one to survive our brutal weather.
Even with the toughest kit, we needed more—so we built a 4-ft underground concrete foundation and anchored the greenhouse to it, creating an underground greenhouse. The earth acts as thermal mass and the concrete walls store solar heat to support night temps without extra heating. Even then, temps drop below freezing inside at night during winter, though still 20–30°F warmer than outside.
So we use the greenhouse to house small animals in winter instead of growing crops. This way, we enjoy fresh eggs daily through winter—a true luxury! Chickens and rabbits live happily inside the bright, roomy greenhouse and fertilize the soil for spring planting.
What was your experience like buying from Planta Greenhouses? The shipping cost was significant since it required freight delivery, but for what we got, it was absolutely worth it.
What type of upgrades have you done? Tell us about your most innovative DIY solutions added to your greenhouse. We not only bought a 32' Sungrow kit—we added two extension kits to make it 48' long! We also anchored it to an underground foundation made from concrete blocks, creating a 12' high underground greenhouse.
What’s your favorite thing about your Planta Greenhouse? It works great but looks even better. It also serves as a multi-purpose passive solar building—like a winter wonderland for our chickens.
Anything else you’d like to add? If you're installing a Planta Greenhouse in a very windy area (65+ mph), you’ll want to secure the polycarbonate panels with a wider aluminum strip—we used a 3" wide one inside the original 1.5" strip from the manufacturer, which can lose grip on the panels.
