A School Year in the Greenhouse

We have grown tomatoes, hot peppers, and experimented with kohlrabi, cauliflower, and broccoli.

The greenhouse improved our gardening experience because our growing season is too short to grow peppers outside. It has opened up a whole new opportunity for us. The greenhouse is being used at a high school, and the peppers get planted in the spring by the students. They are ready to be harvested and made into Hot Pepper Relish in the fall when we are back at school. It is perfect!

The buying experience was great. The greenhouse was easy to buy and put up without any issues. I didn’t need to deal with customer service because there were no issues.

We put raised beds around the outside of the greenhouse with perennial herbs and flowers. This works well for bringing in the pollinators and providing herbs and teas to dry. I also set up a drip hose on the inside, so the greenhouse is very low maintenance. I only have to check in on it every couple of weeks.

My favorite thing about the greenhouse is that I don’t have to worry about snow and wind. We get long, harsh winters, and I didn’t want to have to worry about it collapsing.

    From Vegetables to Winter Plants

This is our first greenhouse, and inside we grow fresh vegetables including green onions, carrots, arugula, lettuce, and spinach, along with several varieties of fresh flowers and annuals for spring planting. We also use it to winter over several non-hardy perennials.

The greenhouse has significantly improved our gardening experience. It has allowed us to keep plants through the winter that we would normally lose, and lets us start planting crops earlier in the season—extending our growing window by two to three months. With the added shade cloth in early summer, we can keep more tender plants in the greenhouse before transitioning them to full sun. It also serves as a pleasant retreat in the in-between seasons—a sunny, warm spot to sit, read, or relax.

Our buying experience with Planta Greenhouses was great. We picked it up at a local warehouse and had no issues. At one point during the build, we called support and they were extremely helpful.

For upgrades, we custom-made wooden shelves to hold a large number of seed trays and plants. We also built a custom work table for potting and gardening tasks. The greenhouse is secured to large lumber beams with rebar driven through them for anchoring. Pond foam sealant was applied around the base to help with insulation. With the foundation we built, we think it can withstand just about anything.

Our favorite thing about the Planta Greenhouse is its durability and lasting build—not to mention how cool it looks. We always get…

How My Planta Greenhouse Works as a Workshop

I installed my first Planta Greenhouse, a Sungrow Compact, in 2024—but I use it a bit differently than most. Instead of growing plants, I grow custom-designed and hand-carved memorials and gravestones! My greenhouse serves as a year-round mini workshop where I carve, grind, and cut stone.

Living in a colder climate, the greenhouse has been a game-changer. I use it as a small annex to my stone carving studio, specifically for cutting granites and sandstones outdoors to keep silica out of my indoor workspace. The passive heating keeps me toasty—even when I’m wet grinding in February—and the interior is easy to hose down, which makes cleanup from stone dust quick and effective.

One of the most useful upgrades I added was installing galvanized bar grating as the floor. This lets water and stone dust drain through while still allowing me to move heavy gravestones around easily on dollies.

Buying my Planta Greenhouse was a breeze. Customer service was great, and I was able to pick it up directly from the warehouse.

Honestly, I love everything about it—the warm light, the comfort, the aesthetic, and its durability. I know I use my greenhouse differently than most, but I just wanted to share another unique and positive way these greenhouses can make an impact!

    Anchored & Ready for Anything

I installed my second greenhouse in 2024, finishing the build in late summer, so I haven’t grown anything inside yet. One of the main reasons I chose a Planta Greenhouse was for its impressive snow load resistance and overall durability against strong winds.

The buying process was smooth and convenient. Customer service was excellent—responsive and helpful throughout.

To improve stability, I anchored one end of the greenhouse to a concrete curb and installed tie-down anchors for uplift resistance. I also added a rain gutter as part of the setup.

So far, my favorite thing about the greenhouse is its ability to handle heavy snow and withstand wind loads. I’m looking forward to using it in the next growing season.

FAQ

Residential Greenhouses

Are there doors on both ends of the greenhouse?

Yes! All of our Sungrow models come with manual doors and a manual window above the door on both ends of the greenhouse.

Do you have lean-to greenhouses?

Unfortunately, we do not have any lean-to greenhouses available at this time.

Do you make custom size greenhouses?

All of our products come pre-packaged by the manufacturer and can only be customized in length (6.5' extension). However, the height of the greenhouse can also be increased if placed on a base (up to 5ft above the ground)

How is the greenhouse anchored to the ground?

Every greenhouse kit comes with optional legs that can be dug directly into the ground. The amount of legs included depends on the greenhouse size.

What is the frame made of?

The greenhouse frame is made out of heavy-duty galvanized steel.

What polycarbonate panels are used for residential greenhouses?

We use 6mm heavy-duty, double-walled polycarbonate panels with a UV-protected outside layer for our Residential Greenhouses.

What type of base/foundation is the best for me?

There are several different types of greenhouse bases, information, and pictures posted by our customers on our Customer Stories page and our Planta Facebook page. Additionally, you can learn more about "Types of Greenhouse Bases - With Pros & Cons of Each" on our blog.

Roof Ventilation Windows

Can I add windows for my greenhouse later?

Roof ventilation windows work as an add-on and can be installed only once the greenhouse installation is complete. Windows can be added later as well.

How do the Automatic Ventilation Windows work?

Our Automatic Ventilation Windows do not require any batteries or electricity. A heat-activated mechanism will open/close the window once a certain temperature is reached.

How many roof ventilation windows are recommended for the greenhouse?

It is strongly recommended to go with an even amount of roof ventilation windows. This is so you can place at least one on either side of the greenhouse. The amount of windows required depends on the greenhouse size, the climate you are in, and the types of plants that will be grown inside the greenhouse.

What are the opening and maximum opening temperatures for the Automatic Windows?

The opening temperature is between 17 °C and 25°C (62.6°F to 77°F), while the maximum opening is at 30 °C (86°F).

Most of our residential and commercial greenhouses are extendable up to 100ft. Learn more about our extension kits for both the Sungrow and Sigma models.

How can I customize my greenhouse?

The customization possibilities are truly endless with a Planta Greenhouse. To help you get started, take a look through “16 Ways to Supercharge Your Greenhouse” on our blog.

Is hanging plants, heaters, and hammocks safe from my greenhouse frame? How much weight does it handle without affecting the guarantee?

It is safe to hang plants and accessories on a Sungrow greenhouse since each internal reinforcement arch can withstand up to 100 lbs/45.3 Kg. On the Sigma series, you can pre-drill the holes on the framing and hang small things. We would not suggest hanging anything heavier than 5 – 10 lbs / 2.2 – 4.5 Kg per arch.

May I heat my greenhouse with fire pits or similar?

You can use any heating source inside, like electricity, gas, propane, and even wood. It may be tricky to heat with wood, as you want to ensure that you keep the stove/pit away from the panels to prevent them from melting or burning if they are too close to the fire source. In this case, the customers ideally would want to come up with an exhaust system, making sure it’s not in contact with the panels, for being a flammable material.
