What do you grow inside your greenhouse? Perennials so they don't die in the Chicago winters like: Palm trees, bird of paradise, lavender, eggplant, peppers, crotons, tradescantia, geraniums, and elephant ears. Basically, all the perennials that are poisonous to cats go inside the greenhouse, because all the ones that are safe for cats go inside the house. We also get to start our annuals about two months earlier than normal for Chicago. As I write this, it is early February and we have already started our annual peppers, tomatoes, daisies, petunias, cosmos, morning glories, cucumbers, and forget-me-nots.
How did your Planta Greenhouse improve your gardening experience? The greenhouse is our absolute favorite place to be. We spend all winter in our greenhouse, getting some sun during the day, despite it being freezing outside. We can care for our plants during the dead of winter, getting that much-needed self-care when it is snowing outside. The greenhouse makes our love for gardening possible year-round, despite the frigid Chicago cold. We love the greenhouse so much that Marcin proposed to me in the greenhouse! And I said YES!
What was your experience like buying from Planta Greenhouses? Buying a greenhouse was a breeze. We bought what we wanted (a Sigma greenhouse with an extension because we wanted the greenhouse to be 20 feet long). The greenhouse arrived on time, delivered to our driveway, on a pallet. We have never had any issues, except our neighbors being jealous of our greenhouse.
What type of upgrades have you done? Tell us about your most innovative DIY solutions added to your greenhouse. We added electric to our greenhouse, which helps us be able to garden during the Chicago winters. We bought a propane-based space heater for when the polar vortex hits Chicago and the temperatures are colder than zero. We have two 65-gallon water jugs that we fill up before the first freeze and then once more during a warm winter reprieve, and that covers our water needs for the entire winter. Our compost bin inside the greenhouse helps provide natural heat during the winter, plus it allows us to be able to compost our food wastes. We have shelves with grow lights to supplement the lack of sun during the winters. And finally, in the front of our greenhouse, we have our seed-starting station.
What's your favorite thing about your Planta Greenhouse? Our greenhouse has become our favorite place to be; so much so that it is impossible to say one favorite thing about it. We have so many memories in the greenhouse, caring for our plants, listening to music, dancing, and having a glass of wine. However, if I have to name one, my favorite memory of our greenhouse is having my best friend propose to me--and I said YES!
Anything else you'd like to add? Building the greenhouse was one of my favorite times with my family. It took about one month (four weekends) where we spent all weekend together assembling the greenhouse. They are some of my favorite memories with my dad and brother.
